Overwatch 2 Competitive Mode: Understanding Skill Tiers and Divisions

Overwatch 2’s Competitive Mode features a refreshed design, most notably with the addition of Divisions within each Skill Tier. Here’s what players can expect when diving into Competitive play in Overwatch 2.

What Are Skill Tiers?

By participating in Overwatch 2 Competitive Matches, players can earn Competitive Points and establish their ranking among other players in their region. After completing Competitive placement matches, performance determines placement in one of eight Skill Tiers:

  • Bronze
  • Silver
  • Gold
  • Platinum
  • Diamond
  • Master
  • Grandmaster
  • Top 500

Each role (Tank, Damage, Support) earns separate Competitive Points, resulting in different Skill Tier rankings for each role played. A player might rank as a Division 2 Master when playing Support, but only achieve Division 5 Platinum when playing Tank.

What Are Divisions?

Overwatch 2 introduces five Divisions within each Skill Tier of Competitive Play. Unlike the original Overwatch that measured Competitive rank using a Skill Rating score (or “SR”), ranking is now determined first by Skill Tier and second by Division.

Divisions range from Division 5 to Division 1, with Division 5 being the lowest and Division 1 being the highest within a Skill Tier. Players earn Competitive Points with each win or tie in a Competitive Match. Skill Tier and Division rankings adjust after every seven wins, or after every twenty losses or ties. Additionally, Skill Tiers partially reset at the start of each season.

Grouping Restrictions Based on Rank

A player’s Skill Tier and Division ranking affects who they can group with:

  • Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond players can only group within two Skill Tiers
  • Master players can group within one Skill Tier
  • Grandmaster players may group with players within three Divisions of their rank
  • Top 500 players can only play with other Top 500 players in their region

For example, Bronze-ranked players may group with Silver or Gold players, but not with Platinum or Diamond players. Players ranked at the Master Skill Tier can only group with Diamond or Grandmaster players.

Those ranked in the Grandmaster Skill Tier face additional restrictions, being limited to playing solo or in a party of two.
