Patience Is Key: The Elder Scrolls 6 Remains Distant, Todd Howard Hints at Possible Shadowdrop

One of the gaming world’s most eagerly awaited titles, The Elder Scrolls 6, remains on the distant horizon. Despite its announcement over seven years ago, Bethesda’s development head Todd Howard recently emphasized that the game is still a considerable time away from release.

In a candid conversation with GQ magazine celebrating the Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition, Howard urged fans to be patient, assuring them that the wait, though lengthy, is necessary.

The Long Wait Continues

This January marked a peculiar milestone: The Elder Scrolls 6’s announcement reached the same age as its predecessor Skyrim was when it was first unveiled. Skyrim launched on November 11, 2011, and The Elder Scrolls 6 was revealed 2,403 days later on June 10, 2018. Now, seven years and five months past that announcement, the release still seems elusive.

Last June marked the six-year mark since The Elder Scrolls 6 was announced, prompting Todd Howard himself to acknowledge the time passed with an “oh wow, that has been a while.” The game is at least underway, as Bethesda revealed it had moved into “early development” as of August 2023, with “early builds” available by March 2024.

Hints and Future Plans

In the recent GQ feature, Howard admitted the prolonged development period but teased the possibility of an The Elder Scrolls 6 will honor a beloved fan with a memorial character, following an inspiring charity effort that raised more than $85,000 for Make-A-Wish. Howard disclosed that Bethesda has engaged with the fans behind this initiative to ensure their vision aligns with the game’s development. “I think we’re aligned,” Howard commented.
