During the PC Gaming Show: Most Wanted 2025 event, a significant transformation was unveiled by the studio behind the game once known as Crosswind. Both the game and its creators have embraced a new identity: Windrose and Windrose Crew, respectively. This change reflects a strategic pivot in the game’s development journey.
A New Direction for Windrose
Originally launched as a free-to-play survival MMO, Crosswind underwent a pivotal shift after an Alpha testing phase. The development team decided to transition to a premium buy-to-play survival game model. In a recent interview, producer Philip Molodkovets explained that the technical challenges involved led to the decision. His view is that crafting a high-quality survival game outweighs the risks of delivering a subpar MMO experience.
Nautical Adventures Await
Despite the scaled-back scope and reduced player capacity, Windrose invites players to become legendary raiders of the seas. Whether choosing solo voyages or teaming up for online co-op, the game draws inspiration from the iconic Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. This influence is evident in the thrilling sea battles, ship-to-land transitions, and a focus on exploration, base building, and combat. Players can select from a variety of vessels, ranging from swift cutters to formidable galleons.
The game promises intense encounters with formidable foes and bosses, offering a Souls-lite combat system enriched with melee weapons, firearms, and tactical moves like parrying and dodging.
A Tale of Betrayal and Survival
The narrative follows a betrayed courier entangled in a dangerous web of empires, pirate factions, and mysterious forces. As the story unfolds, players will traverse diverse biomes, gathering resources crucial for survival. The developers describe the survival mechanics as both refined and comprehensive, enhancing the overall adventure.
Though a specific release date remains elusive, the team aims to launch Windrose in early access for PC by 2026, with potential console versions to follow.
The game has been rebranded from Crosswind to Windrose, marking a shift from a free-to-play model to a premium survival experience.
