Sony’s PlayStation 5 continues to make waves in the gaming world, as the company shared some exciting updates in its Q2 2025 report. The PS5 has now reached a staggering 84.2 million units shipped, marking a slight increase from the previous year. This performance, while still trailing the PS4 when comparing launch periods, is notable given the challenges facing the industry. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s Xbox struggles with its lowest sales since the original console.
PS5 Sales Surge and Game Successes
In the latest quarter, Sony managed to ship 3.9 million PS5 consoles, an increase over the 3.8 million units shipped in Q2 2024. Additionally, full game software sales experienced growth, rising to 80.3 million units from 77.7 million the previous year. First-party titles saw a boost too, with sales hitting 6.3 million units—thanks largely to the launch of Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Yōtei, which sold 3.3 million units in its first month. Ghost of Yōtei’s sales are slightly behind Ghost of Tsushima’s, a trend expected due to its release during a less expansive console base.
Ghost of Yōtei: A New Chapter
Critics have praised Ghost of Yōtei as a worthy successor to the original Ghost of Tsushima, offering a fresh narrative and enhancements to gameplay mechanics. There are whispers of potential DLCs, akin to its predecessor, alongside the upcoming launch of the Legends multiplayer mode set for next year.
PlayStation Network Growth
Sony’s Q2 2025 financial report also highlighted an increase in monthly active users on the PlayStation Network, rising from 116 million to 119 million compared to the same quarter last year. This growth reflects the ongoing engagement and expanding community on Sony’s gaming platform.
