Rare Physical Copies of Obscure Star Wars Racing Game Fetch Hundreds on eBay Amid PS5 Jailbreak Buzz
A surprising surge in demand has hit the gaming market as physical copies of Star Wars Racer Revenge are now fetching over $300. This spike is attributed to reports that an exploit in the game allows for jailbreaking PlayStation 5 consoles.
Rising Prices and eBay Frenzy
Recently completed eBay listings reveal that the PS4 edition of Star Wars Racer Revenge has been selling for $300 or more in the past 24 hours, with prices only set to climb further. On December 31st, over a dozen copies sold for prices ranging between $80 and $166. The trend continued on January 1st, with 11 more copies sold at prices from $180 to $364.50. Now, a flood of additional listings has emerged, with prices hovering between $300 and $400 or even higher.
The Jailbreaking Connection
But why this sudden interest in a 2019 re-release of a Star Wars racing game for PlayStation 4? Reports suggest that the game’s code plays a pivotal role in a new method for jailbreaking the PlayStation 5. This method allows players to potentially run pirated games when the physical disc is inserted. Retailers have been alerted that they might be holding a game now considered a hot commodity.
A Blast from the Past
Originally released for PlayStation 2 in 2002, Star Wars Racer Revenge saw a Limited Run Games re-release for PS4 with only about 8,500 copies. Before this recent boom, copies were available on eBay for roughly $20. This development coincides with the recent announcement of a new Star Wars racing experience, Star Wars: Galactic Racer, developed by veterans from Need for Speed and Burnout, which is expected to launch in 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
