Amid the buzzing conversations about gaming’s future, Dan Houser, the co-founder of Rockstar Games and famed writer, candidly shared his emotions about the development of Red Dead Redemption 3. Houser, who shaped the legendary narratives of Rockstar’s blockbuster games, revealed that hearing of Red Dead Redemption’s continuation without him stirs deeper emotions than his detachment from the upcoming GTA 6. Yet, he concedes that another installment in the Red Dead series “will probably happen.”
The Legacy of Red Dead Redemption
The critically-acclaimed Red Dead Redemption 2, released in 2018, is celebrated as a high-water mark in gaming. As the lead writer, Houser’s departure from Rockstar over five years ago left fans curious about the future direction of their beloved series. In a recent discussion, Houser suggested he’d be more affected by a new entry in the Red Dead series than by the upcoming GTA 6, despite expecting greatness from the latter.
“Letting go of something I worked on for 20-odd years is significant,” Houser remarked. “The standalone stories of GTA differ from the cohesive arc of Red Dead. It might be more poignant to see someone else take up the Red Dead story. But again, that will probably happen too. I don’t own the IP.”
Future Prospects for Red Dead Redemption
The continuation of the Red Dead saga seems likely, considering its origins with Red Dead Revolver in 2004. Rockstar might explore a new sub-series in the franchise at the opportune moment. Roger Clark, the voice behind Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption 2, expressed certainty about a third installment, though he admitted uncertainty about the timeline. Clark dismissed the notion of Arthur Morgan’s return, considering his story complete.
“I’m certain we will see Red Dead Redemption 3 one day,” Clark stated. “When that will be — I have absolutely no idea. Don’t count on Arthur’s involvement either. His story has been told, I feel.”
Clark further commented, “Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two, indicated that GTA and Red Dead are key franchises for Rockstar. So there’s no doubt there will be another Red Dead. But if Arthur Morgan will be involved? I highly doubt it, to be honest. And I think it’s going to be quite some time before we even see a snifter of anything new Red Dead related.”
As anticipation builds, the immediate spotlight remains on GTA 6, expected to launch in May 2026.
