Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto franchise has long captivated audiences, but not all of its ambitious content sees the light of day. Recent discussions have brought to light the intriguing story of a single-player DLC for GTA 5 featuring Trevor as a secret agent, which never made it to release. While fans have had glimpses of such content over the years, new insights from various sources reveal more about the project that focused on Trevor’s undercover adventures.
The Lost Adventure of Trevor
Last year, voice actor Steven Ogg shared that Rockstar had plans for a story expansion centered around Trevor, casting him as a Federal Investigation Bureau agent. During a Q&A with Michael actor Ned Luke and Franklin actor Shawn Fonteno, the trio discussed the canceled DLC, which was set to explore Trevor’s secretive missions with a James Bond twist. “Originally they were gonna do continuing stories of Michael, Franklin, and Trevor,” Luke mentioned, while Ogg elaborated on the thrilling concept of Trevor going undercover for the Feds. Despite filming some scenes, the project was ultimately abandoned.
Why the DLC Disappeared
Ex-Rockstar employee Joe Robino provided further clarity on why the Trevor DLC was dropped. Speaking on a YouTube channel, Robino explained that the team had to prioritize other projects, such as Red Dead Redemption 2, over the standalone DLC. He noted that while much of the content was shelved, elements of it found their way into GTA Online. “It was really really good. But when GTA Online came out it was so much of a cash cow,” Robino said, highlighting the financial decision to focus on the highly successful online platform. Ultimately, this choice meant the thrilling Trevor-centric story never reached fans.
Looking to the Future
Rockstar Games’ co-founder Dan Houser recently addressed the canceled DLC in a podcast, revealing that had the DLC come to fruition, it might have hindered the development of Red Dead Redemption 2. Houser expressed his continued interest in single-player DLC, which he hopes to explore with his new company, Absurd Ventures. As fans speculate on the direction Rockstar might take with GTA 6, questions arise about whether the game will return to its roots with story-based expansions or continue to capitalize on the online experience.
As for Steven Ogg, despite his iconic role as Trevor, he remains indifferent towards the anticipated GTA 6, stating he feels “absolutely nothing” for the upcoming title. Meanwhile, discussions from the Lex Fridman podcast also unveiled other intriguing revelations about past and future projects at Rockstar, leaving fans eager for what lies ahead.
