Nearly a decade has passed since the buzz around a film adaptation of the action-adventure game Sleeping Dogs began, originating from the now-closed United Front Games. The project seemed dormant for years, much like the original game studio. However, Shang-Chi star Simu Liu has taken it upon himself to breathe new life into the film’s development. Liu has taken a significant step forward by bringing on board Timo Tjahjanto as the film’s director.
Director Announcement Sparks New Hope
Both Liu and Tjahjanto shared the exciting update on X (formerly Twitter) in a lively exchange. When a user inquired about the film’s progress, Liu directed them to Tjahjanto. In response, the director posted a gif from the game and declared, “We’ll cross the oceans of time to make this,” to which Liu replied, “Ladies and gents, the director of Sleeping Dogs.”
Behind the Scenes: Script and Production
Although the scriptwriter remains unknown, the project seems to be gaining momentum, largely due to Liu’s dedication. He is not only producing but will also star as Wei Shen, stepping into the roles once associated with Donnie Yen. Tjahjanto expressed his enthusiasm for developing SLEEPING DOGS with Liu, acknowledging that both have a passion for the project and a lot to prove. He mentioned that this venture would take time but promised to deliver the best version possible.
The Road Ahead for Sleeping Dogs
While there is still much work to be done before the film hits theaters, Liu’s commitment suggests that its realization is inching closer. As he continues to assemble the film’s elements, the anticipation for both the movie and a potential new game heightens. After all, Liu’s vision includes not just a film but also a sequel to the beloved game. “First a movie, then a sequel game for everyone…that’s always been the dream,” he shared on X in early 2025.
The journey from game to film is filled with challenges, but the passion of those involved keeps the dream alive.
