Sony Unveils Affordable PS5 Model Exclusive to Japan

Exciting news for gaming fans in Japan as Sony unveils an exclusive PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, available only in Japanese. This release is set to capture the interest of gamers looking for a more affordable option.

The announcement came during the State of Play Japan broadcast, revealing that the 825GB PS5 Digital Edition will be priced at 55,000 yen (around $350) and will hit the shelves on November 21, 2025.

This move is reminiscent of the Japanese language-only Switch 2 model that Nintendo launched earlier this year at a lower price point in Japan.

Comparing the PS5 Models

In terms of pricing, the base PS5 with a disc drive currently retails for $549.99 in the U.S., with the PS5 Digital Edition costing $499.99. The PS5 Pro is priced at $749.99. Notably, prices for all three models increased in the U.S. in August.

The introduction of the more affordable PS5 model in Japan is a strategic move by Sony to boost console sales and expand the PlayStation userbase. Sony recently reported that the PS5 has sold 84.2 million units by the five-year mark, adding 3.9 million units in the quarter ending September 30. This places the PS5 slightly behind the PS4, which exceeded 86.1 million units in the same timeframe.

State of Play Japan: More Hardware Announcements

The exclusive Japan-only PS5 wasn’t the sole hardware reveal at State of Play Japan. Sony also introduced a 27-inch PlayStation Monitor, equipped with VRR support and a DualSense charging hook. Additionally, the event saw the announcement of the first DLC for FromSoftware’s Elden Ring Nightreign. For a full roundup, you can check out everything that was announced at State of Play Japan.
