The Tax System in Dune: Awakening

You can be certain of two things: death and taxes, whether on Dune or IRL. Although taxes may not seem like an interesting game mechanic, they are rather important in Dune: Awakening. Even though they are significant, taxes can sometimes be obscured or confusing. To help you keep your base, here’s how to manage your taxes and keep them at bay.

Your tax payment calculation

Figuring out what you owe is the first step in understanding your taxes. This can be easily done by accessing your Sub-Fief Console. After you’ve opened it, your outstanding balance will be on the right side of the screen.

Usually, the tax you owe is tiny and you can pay it by completing a quest or two. We don’t want you to run out of your Solari, but we want you to play every few weeks.

How to Pay Your Taxes — Step by Step

Fulfillment of tax duties is straightforward. To pay, open your map and travel to Harko Village or Arakeen to find the Tax Collector. If you don’t have an Ornithopter, then you’ll have to go through a trade post to reach these hubs, costing 2500 Solari. Be prepared with adequate funds.

Payment should be made on a regular basis, preferably weekly or bi-weekly. Not paying taxes will set you back a month and may cause you to lose your base after that. If paying your taxes isn’t on your list, it’s time for you to worry as other people will use your hard-earned money to fund their expenses. Remember, you also don’t want another person’s taxes, a situation best avoided although you do have a grace period for this one.

Ways to Reduce Tax Outlay

The tax you pay depends on the space you occupy. The approximate tax should be of the order of 2000 Solari each cycle, at minimum. To Reduce Your Taxes, Keep the Building Concentrated, And Don’t Expand.

Expanding with Staking Units will increase costs. The increase should not be prohibitive, but the expansion must be approached carefully. Before expanding your empire, make sure your additional sites are worth it. More bases will just mean more taxes.
