The Last of Us Composer Hints at Extended Series Run Beyond Season 3

The music writer for HBO’s The Last of Us has hinted that there will be more seasons of the show after the third one. So, there is a good chance that the fans will be given more of the videogame adaptation.

Composer Reveals Plans for Extended Run

On the Last of Us: Savage Starlight podcast, composer Jake Staley, who created the haunting score, made some revealing comments on the show. Recapping the series’ journey, Staley boldly asserted viewers should expect at least two more seasons beyond what is already announced. He was sure on this timeline, but wouldn’t elaborate further.

This lines up with what series showrunner Craig Mazin already mentioned, which is that it would be practically a foregone conclusion of Season 4. Mazin had previously stated that comprising the complete story arc from both Naughty Dog video games in merely three seasons would be a low ball. If all the other story content that needs to be in Season 3 gets crammed in, it’ll be impossible long and take forever to make.

While Mazin admitted that there is a fair chance that Season 3 would be longer in duration than the previous seasons, he said that telling the whole tale within a third season simply is not possible from a logistical point of view.

Strong Viewership Numbers Support Continued Production

HBO has announced that more people are watching The Last of Us after Season 1 ended. The network says it bodes well for future shows. The post-season viewership through linear media and HBO Max has crossed 90 million worldwide. The Last of Us Season 2 did see a drop in viewership numbers for the finale, but network executives told Variety that was due to the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Creative Team Remains Tight-Lipped About Character Futures

Both Mazin and Neil Druckmann have been super secretive about which fan-favorite characters will stay important in future seasons. The two creatives said they don’t really know how involved some fan-favorite characters will be once the show enters its later seasons.

Behind-the-Scenes Insights Continue to Emerge

The production team recently participated in industry events where they provided detailed breakdowns of some of the most challenging and memorable scenes from the videogame adaptation. The talks consisted of secret liaisons to pull off game-changing moments that are translatable to the television format. With respect to major character twists, action scenes, and emotional moments that define a show.

The success of HBO The Last of Us is showcasing the potential for video game adaptations as long as they are completed with care and respect to the source material.
