The Order: 1886 — The Lost Trilogy That Could Have Changed Gaming History

The PS4 exclusive The Order: 1886 was originally envisioned as the opening chapter of a trilogy, according to Ru Weerasuriya, the game’s creative director. The follow-ups, titled The Order 1891 and The Order 1899, were also planned but never fully developed. The sequel had entered early development stages before the project was ultimately cancelled.

A Unique Take on Victorian London

The Order: 1886 offered players a fresh twist on history by imagining a secret, darker side of Victorian-era London. The game’s narrative was built around uncovering hidden truths that rewrote historical events. Weerasuriya shared that the sequel would have expanded on this foundation with larger combat sequences and introduced a new multiplayer mode, enhancing the gameplay experience. Although the third installment never reached production, the team had already mapped out the storyline’s future, including potential expansions that would have taken the saga into the 20th century.

Ready at Dawn’s Journey and Legacy

The studio behind The Order: 1886, Ready at Dawn, had a rich 20-year history, contributing to acclaimed titles like God of War and Daxter. After The Order: 1886 received a mixed response, the studio shifted focus toward virtual reality, releasing Lone Echo for Oculus Rift in 2017. The company was acquired by Meta in 2020 but unfortunately shut down completely in August 2024.

Why the Series Ended

Weerasuriya indicated that the mixed critical reception of the original game played a significant role in the cancellation of the planned sequels. Many players and critics felt the game prioritized cinematic presentation over gameplay freedom, which limited its appeal. Despite its stylish design, The Order: 1886 struggled to fully satisfy the expectations of its audience, leading to the series being shelved.
