CD Projekt Red, the renowned developer behind The Witcher series, is drawing inspiration from Larian Studios’ successful game Baldur’s Gate 3. However, the studio maintains that its future projects will stay true to the expansive open-world format that fans adore. This decision reflects CD Projekt Red’s commitment to innovation while honoring the elements that have defined its previous hits like The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077.
Innovative Open Worlds
In a conversation with PC Gamer, CD Projekt’s joint CEO Michał Nowakowski expressed admiration for Baldur’s Gate 3’s dynamic and interactive world, which he found inspiring. Nonetheless, the studio is determined to evolve its open-world formula in upcoming releases, such as The Witcher IV and the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel. While specifics remain under wraps, sources suggest that enhanced world interactivity is on the horizon.
Considering the accomplishments of Larian Studios with games like the Divinity: Original Sin series, Nowakowski remarked on the distinct nature of their creations. Yet, the engaging world interactivity showcased in Baldur’s Gate 3 has certainly influenced CD Projekt Red’s developmental approach.
The Future of The Witcher Series
The Witcher IV promises to build on the strengths of its predecessors by incorporating innovative elements inspired by Larian’s work. Although The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 have been praised for their detailed environments, fans can expect new layers of depth and interaction in the forthcoming installments. Despite these changes, Andrzej Sapkowski, the author of the original Witcher novels, will not be contributing new material to the game. The developer’s relationship with Sapkowski remains strong, following a renewed agreement in December 2019.
