Action games have maintained a powerful presence over the years, captivating audiences with thrilling experiences. While 2024 introduced several standout surprises and hits, 2025 saw the fruition of long-awaited projects and the return of iconic franchises. This year, action games were polished to near perfection, offering fans of the genre a wealth of must-play titles.

With numerous outstanding action games released over the last year, narrowing them down to the top five was a formidable challenge. However, these select games have a unique edge that sets them apart, making them essential for any action game aficionado.

Ninja Gaiden 4 (8.7)

After a lengthy hiatus, Ninja Gaiden 4 marked the triumphant return of the legendary franchise, with Team NINJA collaborating with PlatinumGames to deliver an exceptional action experience. Despite some concerns from fans regarding the inclusion of PlatinumGames’ mechanics, the release celebrated the legacy of Tomonobu Itagaki, who passed away this year. One of the premier character action series, Ninja Gaiden, is not only alive but thriving.

While the story fell a bit flat, the game’s design and atmosphere continued to capture the essence of the Metroid series.

The story, though not entirely accurate historically, was compelling, and the improved combat and exploration made it a noteworthy addition to the series.

The First Berserker: Khazan (9.0)
