Ubisoft has taken a surprising turn, confirming it will not release a second major expansion for Assassin’s Creed Shadows. This decision means the game will not receive the extensive season pass content fans have come to expect from the franchise.
The first expansion, Claws of Awaji, launched in September as a complimentary gift for those who pre-ordered the game. Initially, it was only the beginning of the planned season pass content, but Ubisoft had already scrapped the season pass concept following a delay that moved the game’s launch from November 2024 to February 2025.
Ubisoft’s Strategic Shift
As confirmed by associate game director Simon Lemay-Comtois, there will be no second expansion equivalent to Claws of Awaji for Year Two. While Ubisoft has occasionally expanded its content plans post-launch in the past, such as with the Saudi-backed DLC for Assassin’s Creed Mirage, there is currently no intention for a second major Shadows expansion, nor plans extending to a Year Three.
In recent years, Ubisoft has consistently provided multiple expansions for its Assassin’s Creed titles, such as Odyssey and Valhalla. The change in approach for Shadows is unexpected, especially given the history of substantial post-launch expansions in the franchise.
Looking Forward
Ubisoft is still committed to supporting Shadows with content updates, although these will not match the scale of a full DLC. Lemay-Comtois mentioned that updates planned for 2026 would be “chunkier” compared to the more frequent, smaller updates of Year One. This decision is part of an adaptive strategy based on community feedback and technological challenges faced during Shadows’ development.
Technological advancements and the transition to a new generation platform were cited as reasons for Shadows’ complex development process. As a result, the post-launch plan had to evolve, focusing more on listening to player feedback and adapting accordingly.
The Path Ahead
While Ubisoft Quebec is already looking towards its next major Assassin’s Creed project, players can still expect ongoing updates for Shadows. These will not be on the scale of traditional expansions but will aim to provide meaningful content. Meanwhile, other Assassin’s Creed projects, such as the anticipated remake of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag and the witchcraft-themed Assassin’s Creed: Hexe, continue to build excitement among fans.
