Nearly 12 years after its initial release, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist has received Steam achievement support in a surprise move by Ubisoft. The publisher has implemented this functionality for the stealth action title and confirmed that these achievements will work retroactively for players who have already completed various missions and challenges.
In their Steam announcement, Ubisoft noted they have removed 19 achievements that were tied to online services which are no longer available. This adjustment ensures players can still achieve 100% completion status in the game without being blocked by unobtainable achievements. Splinter Cell: Blacklist originally launched in August 2013 across multiple platforms including PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and even Nintendo’s Wii U console.
Franchise Status and Upcoming Remake
Blacklist continues to hold the distinction of being the most recent mainline entry in the Splinter Cell series, with the franchise experiencing a decade-long hiatus from new releases. Hope emerged for fans in December 2021 when Ubisoft announced a remake of the original Splinter Cell featuring the iconic protagonist Sam Fisher.
Development responsibility for this remake was assigned to Ubisoft Toronto, the same studio that created Blacklist and later developed Far Cry 6 (2021). During the 20th anniversary celebration of Splinter Cell in 2022, the company shared limited information about the remake project, including concept art and plans for enhanced enemy AI systems. Since these initial reveals, however, details about the remake’s progress have been notably scarce.
Additional Projects and Media Adaptations
The Splinter Cell brand has ventured into various formats beyond traditional gaming in recent years. A virtual reality title was previously in development but was canceled in 2022. That same year, fans received an eight-episode Splinter Cell audio series, providing some fresh content within the universe.
The franchise also maintains a presence in the free-to-play shooter XDefiant through a dedicated faction, though this game is scheduled to cease operations in June 2025. On the cinematic front, a planned Splinter Cell movie that potentially would have starred Tom Hardy as Sam Fisher was canceled last year.
Despite this setback, the stealth franchise will still reach screens through an upcoming Netflix animated series titled Splinter Cell: Deathwatch. In an interesting casting decision, Liev Schreiber will provide the voice for Sam Fisher, replacing Michael Ironside who traditionally voiced the character throughout most of the game series.
