Unlocking the Mystery of the Old Key in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

During the Festival at the beginning of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, immediately after the Gommage event, players can find three merchant stalls to the left of the descending steps. Each vendor offers a special reward in exchange for a Token. Though players start with only one Token, there’s no need to stress about which reward to choose, as additional Tokens can be collected before departing the area. One Token can be earned by successfully answering trivia questions (multiple attempts are permitted if incorrect answers are given), while another Token is presented by Maelle during a conversation at the dock.

With at least one Token in inventory, players should approach the rightmost stall where Colette will trade a mysterious item for a Token – the Old Key. After obtaining the Old Key, players can proceed with the main storyline as desired, as the key’s purpose won’t become evident until further into the adventure.

Where the Old Key Can Be Used

The Old Key becomes useful upon reaching Old Lumiere as part of the main questline. In this region, the key unlocks a door providing access to a Journal entry from a previous Expedition.

After the party separates, players eventually take control of Maelle. Moving down the path beyond the Rest Point flag and through a destroyed archway leads to a fork in the road.

This location is identifiable by the windmill wheel directly ahead, with what appears to be a dead end to the right and a downward sloping path to the left. Players should head toward the apparent dead end on the right and drop down onto the pipe below.

After collecting the Grandiose Chroma Catalyst resting on the pipe, players should drop down again through the hole in the pipe. Immediately turning around reveals a Journal entry behind a locked gate.

This is where the Old Key comes into play. Interacting with the gate unlocks it, allowing players to retrieve the Fracture Survivor Journal entry. Players can then interact with the glowing orb at the pipe’s far end to create a rope for climbing back up and continuing through the remainder of the zone.
