Unveiling AMD Zen 6 Medusa Point: Surprising High-TDP and Low-TDP Variants Emerge

The mobile computing world is about to get more exciting with the introduction of AMD’s Zen 6 mobile chips. Offering both 28W and 45W variants, these chips promise to cater to a wide range of performance needs. The anticipation for these releases has been heightened by recent insights into their specifications and capabilities, setting the stage for a competitive advancement in mobile processing power.

NBD Shipping Manifest Unveils Dual Variants of Medusa Point

Recent leaks from an NBD shipping manifest have shed light on the availability of two Medusa Point variants, differentiated by their thermal design power (TDP) ratings. Previously, the spotlight was on the 45W TDP models, but new evidence confirms that AMD is maintaining its 28W variant, intended as the successor to the 28W Strix Point chips. A table shows listings for 'HEATSINK MEDUSA FP10', with one entry marked 'HIGH TDP' and the other 'LOW TDP', both noted as '(FOC)'. The existence of both “High-TDP” and “Low-TDP” Medusa Point SKUs has been confirmed through leaked shipping logs. Furthermore, the CPUs will transition to the newer FP10 socket, which is slightly larger than the FP8 used in the current Zen 5-based Strix Point but more compact than the FP11 of Strix Halo.

Medusa Point’s Architectural Highlights

The shift to Zen 6 architecture signals a significant leap in processing power, with Medusa Point offerings potentially reaching up to 22 cores through an innovative core combination. This includes 12 Zen 6 cores, complemented by a mix of Classic, Dense, and Low Power Cores. The Ryzen 5 and 7 series, however, will feature a 4C+4D+2LP configuration while maintaining the same 8 Compute Units for the iGPU, based on the RDNA 3.5 architecture. The divergence into High and Low TDP variants for Medusa Point aligns with the expected power requirements of the Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 series, likely falling under the Low-TDP category.
