The new Resident Evil title dubbed Resident Evil 9 will feature the character Grace Ashcroft, supposedly the daughter of Resident Evil: Outbreak’s Alyssa Ashcroft. Although Capcom has introduced brand new faces in its franchises, such as Ethan Winters in the last two mainline entries, a very popular expectation among fans was that player Leon S. Kennedy would return. During the Capcom Showcase for June 2022, the developers explained their rationale behind this.
The Challenge with Leon as a Horror Protagonist
Developers during the showcase mentioned that Leon was originally going to be the main character. In the end, they decided it would be tough to make a horror game on him. A developer explains that one does not choose a creature like Leon for something horrific because he is so seasoned and fearless. If he were to be shown a falling bucket, he would not get startled. Therefore, anyone seeing him get startled at something would not be authentic. He is thus poorly suited for the horror experience they wish to create with Requiem, Capcom hopes.
Grace Ashcroft: A More At-Risk Hero
While Leon is experienced, Grace (an FBI analyst with weapons training) must face her fears throughout the game. At the start of her journey, developers described her as ‘shy and easily scared’ thus making her character arc a perfect fit for the horror game. This vulnerability allows players to better identify with the character’s situation as they suffer through the horrors of Resident Evil: Requiem.
Leon’s Legacy in the Franchise
Leon Kennedy has been major part of Resident Evil universe, debuting in the Resident Evil 2 alongside Claire Redfield. He then went on to star in acclaimed Resident Evil 4 and appeared as one of the many playable character in Resident Evil 6. He has since been featured in numerous spinoff titles, making one of the most recognizable characters in the franchise.
What Role for Leon in Requiem?
It is unknown if Leon will show up in Requiem. Yet, Capcom has in the past integrated fan-favourite characters into the story even when the character is not playable. Chris Redfield in Resident Evil: Village shows the same.
Requiem, out next February, is a horror-focused entry – ironically it is Leon’s heroic nature and unflappable demeanor which makes him less suitable for it.
