Wizards of the Coast Revamps Magic: The Gathering’s Monster Hunter Collaboration

Magic: The Gathering fans were left in suspense as Wizards of the Coast decided to pull back and re-evaluate their Secret Lair x Monster Hunter collaboration. The company acknowledged that their initial effort didn’t meet expectations and promised to deliver a better experience.

A New Direction for Secret Lair

This collaboration was originally announced with four different drops, each priced at $29.99, with a foil edition available for $39.99. The collection featured reprints of existing cards with Monster Hunter themes, but nothing new in terms of mechanics. Sources indicate that fans were not pleased, and Wizards of the Coast quickly responded to the feedback.

“Let’s cut to the chase: the Secret Lair x Monster Hunter Superdrop we revealed last week fell short of expectations,” the company admitted. “We heard loud and clear that you were disappointed, and we believe we can do better. So, we’re going to postpone this release and rework this Superdrop entirely.

Addressing Fan Expectations

Wizards of the Coast expressed their intention to bring the Monster Hunter universe into Magic: The Gathering more effectively. The company acknowledged that card selection and thematic integration were not up to par. They plan to release an updated Superdrop with a new date to be announced in 2026. “Like many of you, we’re big fans of Monster Hunter. It’s why we put this Superdrop together. But in our excitement, we missed the mark on elements like card selection and faithfully integrating the world and mechanics of Monster Hunter,” the company stated.

The Future of Magic Collaborations

It seems like Magic: The Gathering has been buzzing with exciting collaborations, from Sonic to SpongeBob, and the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender set. The next year’s lineup includes TMNT, The Hobbit, Marvel, and Star Trek. Now, fans can look forward to a revised Monster Hunter set in 2026.
