WoW Game Director Shuts Down Console Speculations: ‘We Would Just Say It’

World of Warcraft’s Console Speculation Dismissed

For over two decades, World of Warcraft has kindled speculation about a potential console adaptation. While discussions between World of Warcraft’s franchise VP Holly Longdale and Microsoft hinted at possibilities following Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, recent statements have refocused expectations.

World of Warcraft Game Director Ion Hazzikostas has clarified that the upcoming accessibility features in the Midnight expansion are not designed to facilitate a console port. Speaking on the Unshackled Fury podcast, Hazzikostas emphasized their commitment to enhancing the PC experience. He explained that while World of Warcraft offers incredible depth, the goal is to make the game approachable, aligning with Blizzard’s ethos of creating games that are easy to learn but challenging to master.

Console Adaptation: A Distant Possibility

From personal experience with the Midnight Alpha, the game remains complex and not ideally suited for gamepad play. Unlike titles such as Final Fantasy XIV and The Elder Scrolls Online, which were designed with console compatibility from the start, World of Warcraft would require significant reworking to achieve a similar level of accessibility. The effort needed for such a transformation may outweigh the perceived benefits, casting doubt on the likelihood of a console version.

Upcoming Releases and Events

While World of Warcraft: Midnight’s exact release date remains unconfirmed, speculation suggests a launch in February 2026. Meanwhile, Blizzard fans can look forward to BlizzCon 2026, with early bird tickets becoming available soon.
