Xbox 360 Receives Surprising System Update Nearly Two Decades After Launch

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 system update is now out despite being launched in 2005 and having long been discontinued. As per a Reddit user, when he booted his Xbox 360, he discovered that the dashboard had been refreshed.

What Changes Were Implemented?

It’s not clear yet what all the update includes, but users in the Reddit thread have noticed several small changes. Most notably, game thumbnail images should show up more accurately and no longer appear stretched out as they did before.

Marketing the Next Generation

Interestingly, the new dashboard now prominently displays ads for the Xbox Series X|S consoles. These ads tell you to upgrade your console and experience next-gen performance on Xbox 360. It is an advertisement that the owners of Xbox 360 will like.

Context Following Store Closure

After the Xbox 360 digital storefront finally closes down and permanently ends the sale of games in July 2024, which results in hundreds of games and content vouchers ceasing to be available for sale. After the store closed, many store-related tiles were removed from the dashboard which made the UI look quite bare and old.

The update comes when the store closing has caused visual inconsistencies that Microsoft may be addressing. Another possibility is that Microsoft is suggesting Xbox 360 users to upgrade their hardware.
