ZeniMax Online Studios is embarking on a new era for Elder Scrolls Online with a shift to a seasonal content model. Starting April 2, 2026, players will experience the game through a series of seasons, each offering new content that will be available for free. Instead of traditional expansion packs, the game will pivot to a battle-pass system called Tamriel Tomes, featuring both free and paid progression tracks. This major transformation aims to enrich player experience by providing consistent and engaging content updates.
The Arrival of Season Zero: Dawn and Dusk
The first season, titled “Season Zero: Dawn and Dusk,” will introduce players to the Night Market, a unique seven-week event zone located in Oblivion’s Fargrave realm. In this event, players will align with one of three factions, tackling new storylines and quests. Update 49, launching on March 9, 2026, will bring a host of quality-of-life improvements, including free skill and attribute respecs and expanded housing limits. The Night Market presents a challenging new zone that encourages cooperative gameplay and will return in future seasons with alternate faction choices.
The new seasonal model will make all major gameplay content free, shifting the revenue model to a battle-pass system with Tamriel Tomes. This transition eliminates the need for annual Chapter purchases, fostering a more unified player base. Additionally, long-requested features such as increased overland difficulty levels and dynamic in-game events are set to enhance the core experience.
Looking Ahead: Challenges and Innovations
As ZeniMax Online Studios continues to evolve Elder Scrolls Online, players can anticipate a variety of exciting developments. High on the agenda is the introduction of crossplay—a feature still in development due to its complexity. The studio plans to roll out an array of dynamic events and multi-stage challenges, beginning with Season One in July. These innovations aim to make the world more vibrant and interactive, further enhancing player engagement.

While the game will not see the introduction of new group dungeons in 2026, solo dungeons and trials are set to provide fresh challenges and rewards. Feedback from the community will play a significant role in shaping the ongoing evolution of the game, with the studio committed to transparency and player involvement in new content development.
