A major shake-up has occurred at ZeniMax Online Studios with the departure of its founder and former studio head, Matt Firor. His resignation follows the unexpected termination of an ambitious project, Project Blackbird, leaving a significant impact on the team and the studio’s future direction.
Project Blackbird’s Cancellation and Firor’s Departure
Matt Firor announced his resignation via a LinkedIn post, discussing the cancellation of Project Blackbird, an unannounced MMORPG he had long aspired to create. The cancellation of this project was a pivotal moment that led to Firor’s decision to step down from his leadership role. Firor expressed deep regret for his colleagues, many of whom he had worked with for over two decades, describing them as an incredibly talented group of developers.
Firor clarified he is not part of any new ventures initiated by former ZeniMax Online members affected by earlier layoffs. Instead, he is offering informal advice to some of these projects, reassuring that they are in capable hands.
Uncertain Future and New Endeavors
While Firor remains uncertain about his next professional steps, he is currently involved in advising and investing in various projects and startups. Although there is no immediate plan to establish a new development studio, Firor continues to explore opportunities in the gaming industry.
Project Blackbird, once a promising sci-fi MMORPG under development since 2018 at ZeniMax Online Studios, was canceled by Xbox during a widespread layoff in the summer of 2025. Before its termination, sources indicated that the project was progressing well and was poised to expand into full production. The abrupt cancellation resulted in the dismissal of the entire project team.
ZeniMax Online Studios’ Legacy and Future
Founded in 2007 by Firor under ZeniMax Media, ZeniMax Online Studios crafted and launched The Elder Scrolls Online in 2014, which continues to receive updates, including the notable Gold Road expansion released in January 2024. Firor led the studio through significant milestones, including the acquisition of ZeniMax Media by Microsoft in 2021. Despite the cancellation of Project Blackbird, ZeniMax Online Studios continues its operations, with Joseph Burba now steering the direction of The Elder Scrolls Online.
