While the game secured generally favorable critic reviews, it failed to reach a broad player base. Wilton Regan reflected on the situation, stating she was emotionally crushed by the reception. She expressed admiration for the game’s development, saying it maintained the essence of what made BioWare special, and criticized the negativity surrounding its release.
Allegations of Prejudice and Targeted Review Bombing
From the start, The Veilguard faced heavy online criticism, much of which focused on its inclusion of progressive character choices. The game featured a non-binary companion and allowed players to opt for a transgender protagonist—elements that drew fire from some circles. These controversies led to the game being tagged on Steam with terms like “LGBTQ+” and “politics,” and its user rating slipped into “Mixed” territory.
Wilton Regan addressed this head-on, noting that backlash began even before the game was available to the public. She condemned premature judgments, calling it irrational to critique creative works without firsthand experience. According to her, many online detractors were acting out of bad faith rather than genuine concern for the game’s quality.
Commercial Shortfall and Studio Impact
Despite the ambition behind it, The Veilguard fell short of expectations. In early 2025, publisher Electronic Arts reported that the game had only reached half of its projected performance goals. Around the same time, director Corrine Busche announced her departure, and several team members were let go. The studio confirmed that no additional content or updates would be released for the title, marking an abrupt end to its life cycle.
